A year ago, we began studying the effects of using GMOVE-SUIT active compression on people with psychomotor disorders, including Elhers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Today, thanks to the actions carried out by the association SED1+ and Michèle Landais, some people are able to try or use GMOVE-SUIT in order to benefit from a “superior” quality of life. Let’s come back to the main problems encountered by patients affected by the EDS.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: relieving symptoms through active compression
EDS is an inherited connective tissue disease. It exists in several forms, with varying degrees of severity. People suffering from this disease also have to adapt in their daily life or at work due to the different manifestations linked to the disease: decrease in tension, fatigue, subluxation of the limbs due to hyper laxity, leg pain and bad posture are all elements to be fought against.
For the EDS, there is no treatment that allows a cure. However, compressive and posture-improving orthotic systems help to relieve those affected, as does the GMOVE-SUIT which acts like a dynamic compressive orthotic.
EDS patients use these compressive orthoses because they allow them to maintain mobility and constant compression. The main advantage of this compression is its proprioception, which allows the patient to feel better his body and situate himself in an environment. The proprioception will be improved thanks to the activation of the mechanoreceptors, located in the subcutaneous connective tissue.
The benefits of active compression GMOVE-SUIT
There are several beneficial effects to wear the GMOVE-SUIT active compression device:
– Facilitation of neuromotor transmissions thanks to the activation of the mechanoreceptors.
– An increased proprioception, which will lead to a better stabilization of the patient. Thanks to the constant pressure applied to the connective tissue, the balance is improved.
– A maintenance of the joints avoiding subluxations. Indeed, the joints of the lower limbs are free and the constant pressure applied will help keep them under control.
– An exit from the spiral of deconditioning to effort, and the possibility of regaining a certain independence in daily life.
Active compression offers other benefits for people with these psychomotor disorders:
– Pain relief. Like compression orthoses, GMOVE-SUIT relieves pain with a pressure between 30 and 70 mmHg.
– Venous return aided by active compression. Indeed, one of the main goals of the GMOVE-SUIT is to naturally stimulate the contraction of the sural triceps in order to help the deoxygenated blood to return.
To get out of the spiral of deconditioning with effort, physical activity is one of the best solutions and brings certain benefits. However, care must be taken not to overdo it. Each case is different, and some patients do not have the ability to perform these exercises outside of rehabilitation sessions.
